#Excerpt The Lost Heir by Jane Cable

The Lost Heir
Cornwall, 2020
At the beginning of lockdown, teacher Carla Burgess needs to make some changes to her life. She no longer loves her job, and it’s certainly time to kick her on-off boyfriend into touch. But then, while walking on the cliffs she meets, Mani Dolcoath, a gorgeous American with a dark aura.
Mani is researching his family history, and slowly their lives and their heritage begin to entwine. The discovery of a locked Georgian tea caddy in the barn on her parents’ farm intrigues Carla, but then she starts to see orbs, something that hasn’t happened since her grandmother died. They terrify her and she’ll do anything to outrun them, but will she lose Mani’s friendship in the process?
Cornwall, 1810
Harriet Lemon’s position as companion to Lady Frances Basset (Franny) perfectly conceals the fact they are lovers. But when Franny is raped and falls pregnant their lives are destined to change forever.
The one person who may be able to help them is Franny’s childhood friend, William Burgess, a notorious smuggler. But he has secrets of his own he needs to protect. Will his loyalties be divided, or will he come through?

EXTRACT FROM THE LOST HEIR
It’s March 2020 and along with the rest of the country, Cornwall is in lockdown. During her daily exercise walks Carla Burgess has seen a runner with a strange, dark aura. And Carla hates auras; her gran used to see them, but she doesn’t want to know.
When I emerge from the woods the sea is glistening ahead of me, and I take the track towards Basset Cove. A lone figure stands near the cliff edge and I recognise him as the runner; tall, broad-shouldered, and still the intangible, barely describable, dark green non-glow around his head. I hope he will be on his way before I reach him, but instead he seems to be waiting for me.
“Excuse me, but could that possibly be a seal down on those rocks?” His voice is polite, his accent American. Not at all what I expected.
Standing the regulation two metres away — or maybe a little more — I follow his pointing finger towards the cove. “Yes, that would be a seal.”
“Wow.”
“Or perhaps a rather chubby mermaid in a wetsuit.”
His laugh is as dazzling as his smile. “I suppose it was a rather stupid question.”
He speaks with a hint of southern drawl, and I ask him where he’s from.
“Sugar Land, Texas.”
“You’re a long way from home.” Statement of the bleeding obvious.
“I arrived at the beginning of March on a year’s contract so you could say my timing was unfortunate.”
“Very.”
We stand and gaze down at the motionless seal.
“It is OK, isn’t it?” he ventures.
“Oh yes. It’ll just be resting. We do see them along this part of the coast, although they’re far from common.”
He nods, then turns to me. “I’m Mani, by the way. I’d shake your hand but obviously under the circumstances…”
“And I’m Carla.”
“Good to meet you, Carla.”
“And you. But I really should be getting on.”
“Me too. I have an online team meeting at ten. Have a nice day.”
His footsteps drum away from me towards the woods as I set out along the cliff path in the direction of Portreath.
