Sometimes, life can throw you a curve ball that completely knocks you off your feet. Take, for instance, the main character of Avery Jenkins’ stunning and atmospheric thriller, ‘Dark River.’ Asa Cire is a gray market dealer, which means that he obtains antiques and rare items for perspective buyers and that his acquisition of these items is not always strictly legal. Still, Asa is an honorable man with good intentions who lives a basically normal life. That is, until the day that he receives a strange vision of a murdered teenage girl in water.
Asa is used to seeing images in his mind while he meditates, but never of strangers and certainly not of murder victims. The girl is Elle Anderson and she was murdered twenty years earlier. Her killer was never caught and her case was never solved. Asa finds himself compelled to investigate the murder and discover what actually happened to the girl all those years ago. But there is a catch, Asa is brought an old manuscript by a friend of his that also deals in rare artifacts. The manuscript is called the Zamenhof manuscript and once Asa begins to make sense of it, he finds out that it bears an unexpected and startling connection not only to Elle Anderson, but to himself as well.
I loved reading this one and I loved being in Asa’s head throughout it. Rarely do I come across a main character that I like so much or one that I can root for so thoroughly. Asa’s knowledge of rare books and random facts made him the perfect non-detective for this non-traditional mystery and I couldn’t get enough. Along with all of the other characters that made up this great story, the setting really popped and made everything come together perfectly. Five stars!
