Extract from The Last Good Summer by JJ Green
Belle calls on Fionn’s neighbour, Ed, who she believes might have seen something the night Fionn was murdered:
Belle rapped three times on the door of number thirty-six, triggering the overexcited yapping of what she guessed was the Jack Russell she had seen before. In spite of the racket, she got no answer, so she knocked again, louder. This time, she got a result.
‘Get to your bed, Spanner.’ It was Ed, that grating voice of his unmistakable. ‘Don’t have me tell you again.’
Spanner growled but seemed to retreat. After some clicking and scraping of locks and bolts, the door opened just a crack, releasing a rush of hot, stale air.
‘Who is it? What do you want?’ Ed poked his head out the door as though he was a mole peeking from a hole in the ground.
‘My name’s McGee,’ Belle said, flashing her press ID card. ‘I’m a reporter. I was hoping I might talk to you about the murder that happened in number twenty-six.’
‘I don’t know anything about that. Lemme see that ID.’
He opened the door wider and Belle held her card closer.
‘Um, you’re with that big-deal Dublin paper, I see,’ he said. ‘Bit far from home.’
‘No, actually, I’m from this part of the country. I’m visiting for a bit and thought I’d do a piece on Fionn Power’s murder while I was here.’
‘Well, you can’t come in. I said the same thing to the police, nosey so-and-sos. You can’t come in.’

J. J. Green is an Irish writer who hails from Donegal and lives in Derry. She’s had a passion for writing fiction from childhood and has honed her creative writing skills throughout her adult life. As a social and environmental activist, she also writes non-fiction in the form of political essays that mainly focus on economic and environmental injustice. The Last Good Summer is her debut novel.
