For My Sins
by S C Cunningham
An addictive mix of ‘Lock Stock’, ‘RocknRolla’, ‘Killing Eve’, and ‘Line of Duty’.
Knowing his days are numbered, a seasoned criminal finds his life calling, to expose and cull the sordid underbelly of the world’s elite. Delicious, charming, cunning, avenging, David Howard escapes prison and agrees to an MI6 deal, to close down a high-profile trafficking ring in exchange for his freedom – setting a thief to catch a thief.
With a target on his back, he’s helped by a rogue police unit, working behind the scenes to right cases that fall through the courts’ fingers. In an unlikely coupling, they share a goal… and will risk everything to attain it.
A page-turning, cheeky, thought-provoking, at times laugh-out-loud, contemporary psycho-thriller, that comes with a warning.

FOR MY SINS by SCCunningham – Extract
Touring the UK, iconic pop star, Isadora Bates, is the daughter of the renowned Lord Knute Bates MP. Master Bates, as David likes to call him, is the boss of an underground trafficking ring. He is also the last name on David’s death list. They knew each other from Heddington Hall boarding school for boys. David has some scores to settle.
Knightsbridge, London
Izi stretched out on her king-size bed. Stuck in hotel rooms, away from home, her pets, and friends, was a lonely business. It gave her way too much time to think. To remember. To let ruminating, recurring, thoughts run amok in her head.
If she had her time again, she wouldn’t choose fame. She would still sing, but find a way of releasing her music differently, anonymously. Performing great works but with none of the celebrity shackles.
She would be free to walk streets without being mobbed, instead of trapped in a lonely, gilded high security cage. Not knowing who to trust, who her real friends were, or if her next outing would be her last. Forever looking over her shoulder, wondering if today was the day she crossed paths with a crazy, making a name for themself by killing someone famous. Careful what you wish for fame isn’t everything, it kills freedom.
From a young age, music had been her place of escape. A secret powerful energy that no one could take from her. A nest in which to curl up and hide from the feelings of shame her father had given on her.
Powerful, successful, respected Knute Bates had abused his daughter from a young age.
He tended to leave her alone these days, she was too old for him now. But the damage had been done. She saw herself as broken, unworthy, dirty.
Every time she stood on the stage in front of thousands of adoring fans she felt an imposter, a fraud, a phony. All her songs of love, happiness, joy, were false. Made-up worlds she wished she’d experienced. If only they knew.
She slid off the bed, her silk nightdress slipping off her shoulders, and made her way to the bar. She pulled out a bottle of champagne and flicked off her TV.
A news station was excitedly reporting a hate crime attack on her father. Someone had spraypainted the word ‘Pedo’ across the sides of his car, and the front door of his mansion, signing it with the name ‘HedHall’, then thrown a petrol bomb into a window. All manner of emergency vehicles had attended the scene, complete over kill, the bomb had already fizzled out, but he was a Lord, and the gentry were news.
She walked over to her suite door, opened it, and stood waiting for her guard to peer inside.
He did so.
‘Can you open this for me?’ she held up the bottle between them.
‘But it’s eight o’clock in the morning miss,’ he raised a cheeky eye-brow looking at her.
‘I didn’t ask what time it was, I asked can you open it.’
‘Yes miss,’ he sighed, reaching in to take it from her.
But she let the door go, and backed into the room, taking the bottle with her.
He caught the closing door, muttered something to another guard in the hallway, and followed her in.
The door closed behind him.
