At the writers’ conference, murder tops the program.
Aspiring mystery author Emma Banefield and travel writer Nicole Earp are excited to attend a writers’ conference during their latest sisters’ getaway. Nic’s birthday should be all about relaxation, writing, and a chocolate martini to toast another trip around the sun, but the climate at the gathering rumbles like a sudden desert thunderstorm.
When sparks fly between the keynote speaker and her timid assistant over a handsome mystery author, the subtitle on this anticipated tranquil weekend spells drama. If a heated love triangle, bruised egos, and betrayal aren’t enough to upset the atmosphere, the conference banquet erupts into a drunken brawl and sends the place spinning. After a body is discovered, Nic and Em do what they do best—snoop—and become embroiled in a mystery that jumps off the pages of a true-crime bestseller.
With more than enough suspects and little time, the amateur sleuths have their hands full finding the killer. But can the competitive Chocolate Martini Sisters solve the crime before the prickly chief detective does, or will a murderer outwit them all?
Character Interview: Emma Banefield
Title: A few facts about Emma
JP: Hi. I’m Joyce Proell. Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Emma Banefield, one of the characters in Reading, Writing and Murder. As one of the book’s authors, I know things about her, but readers often like to learn more than what the story reveals. We’re excited to have this opportunity to visit with her. Welcome, Emma.
EB: Happy to be here.
JP: If I’d never met you, and we arranged to meet at a café, how would I identify you?
EB: I’d be the middle-age woman dressed in hunter green slacks and long sleeve tee, with Tom Edelman loafers, a leather belt, and a practical cross over bag. I’m all about simplicity and comfort. No high heels for me. I wear my brown hair with red highlights in a short, spiky cut.
JP: What did you dream of becoming when you were a child?
EB: An anthropologist, a pastry chef, a landscape architect, a brain surgeon. I always wanted a career, but couldn’t seem to land on one that stuck until I reached junior year in college.
JP: You currently work at a mental health clinic. How did you choose social work as a career, and specifically the specialty of mental health?
EB: In school, I took a social work course to fulfil one of my psychology requirements. The instructor’s enthusiasm and the types of work he described appealed to me. I wanted a career where I could affect positive change in a person’s life. I got degrees in both Psychology and Social Work.
JP: Doing the work you do must have its rewards but also be very stressful. What do you do to unwind and relax?
EB: Meditation and running are critical to me.
JP: What are your hobbies?
EB: Reading, writing, and a little gardening
JP: What’s your greatest passion these days?
EB: Writing mystery.
JP: What are three words that best describe you?
EB: Organized, Analytical, Compassionate
JP: What is the happiest moment of your life?
EB: I have three happiest moments. My first date with Jonathan, the day I married him and the birth of my son, Liam.
JP: What is the worst moment of your life?
EB: The day Jonathan died.
JP: What is your most embarrassing moment?
EB: Honestly, there are so many. Once, there was a young man I hoped to impress. We went to see a film on our first date. When the movie ended, we followed the crowd up the theatre aisle toward the exit. As I walked, the toe of my shoe slid into an empty box of popcorn. I kept walking while trying to shake it off, hoping my date didn’t notice. When we got out to the lobby, my only alternative was to reach down and wriggle it from my foot. My date appeared even more mortified than I felt. Needless to say, I never saw him again.
JP: What is one thing people should know about you?
EB: I’m speak my mind and won’t take no for an answer.
JP: Thank you for being with us today.
EB: My pleasure.
