Discovery of the Five Senses is the first book in ‘Urban Boys’ series, and is a coming of age adventure story. Five school friends venture into the forbidden forest where each of them receives a different super power – this was a great paranormal twist for the story. It did take me a while to get into the story, there were a lot of characters to be introduced and I found the writing to be overly descriptive at times and sometimes unnecessary at others (the football game comes to mind – honestly I skimmed it as it was too much)

This would be a great book for young adults to read, and I liked that it was an all boy cast of main characters, which I think will appeal to younger boys to encourage them to read. The story itself was different to what I normally read, but once I got past the first third of the book I really started to enjoy it more.  Good vs Evil, working together as a team, friendships and relationships are all forefront themes in this book.
