Genre: Paranormal Romance
Centuries ago ten powerful vampire gods first walked the earth; their blood thirst knew no boundaries. The destruction of mankind was inevitable. Recognizing their weakness, they selected twelve wise human beings to transform with their godly blood. These twelve, known as The Old Ones and The Council, govern The Ten. A blood lottery appeasing The Ten’s hunger was set forth into the human world and passed down every fifth generation, continuing into the present day.
All of Beth Ryan’s life a mysterious mist watched over her, a mist she believed to be a vampire. On a cold winter night, she comes face to face with Philippe Delon, a 700 year old vampire with a human soul. Beth is certain Philippe is the vampire behind the mist. She is drawn to him, accepting his immortality without question or fear.
Beth and Philippe cannot deny their love for each other, nor do they try to fight it. Within days of their encounter, Beth accepts Philippe’s invitation to move into his mansion. The mansion unlocks the door to the vampire world and exposes secrets from Beth’s past. Within its walls, she learns the true identity of the mist, her link to the blood lottery, and betrayal of her loved ones. Surrounded by lies, Beth stands before The Council begging for resolution.
I love Vampire books, they are my favourite genre, but this one took me a while to get into. I actually re-read the prologue and chapter 1 twice at least to make sure I was reading it right.
Beth is in love with a mist – yes you read that right, a mist that has been visiting her since she was 6 years old. She has a connection to it – or rather him as she refers to it. Danny is her best friend and a comic book nerd and he offers her the idea that the mist can be one of three things – based on the comics he has read – an alien, a warlock or a vampire.
Fast forward and Beth and Danny have now been dating four years , but she is still thinking and being visited by the mist. Whilst out one night at their bench the mist appears and that is just the end for Danny, he asks Beth chose between him and the mist and when she doesn’t answer he walks away. Beth tells the mist to either trust her and show himself to her or she never wants to see him again. From that moment she is introduced to Philippe and her life is not to be the same again.
I felt she moved way to quick with Philippe to be believable. she moved in after something like 48 hours, the were sleeping together not long after then they are engaged! It just didn’t seems to gel well…. She didn’t even bother that he was a vampire and when she told her room mate Anna, that she was moving out and going to live him moments after breaking up with Danny, Anna is just like ok lets pack. It just didn’t seem real, ok I know we are talking about Vampires and everything but no normal friend would behave that way when their room mate announces something like that!
I really, really wanted to like this book. I loved the synopsis and the cover but the whole story just didn’t feel real with they way the characters reacted to situation the way they did. I trudged on with the rest of the book, disliking Beth as a character even more the whole time, eventually the story started to get good for me.
3 stars I am afraid.
